요즘 디버깅 프로세스에 관한 글들을 읽고 있는데, Debugging: From Novice to Expert를 읽다가, 드라이퍼스 모델(The Dreyfus Model)이라는 것을 보게 되었다. Dreyfus가 제안한 이 모델은 어떠한 개인의 능력을 초보자부터 전문가로 나누는 것으로 각 단계의 특징에 대해서 자세하게 소개하고 있다. 원래는 Nursing 분야에서 활용하던 것이라고 한다. 그래서 그런지 실제로 Dreyfus Model을 검색해 보았더니, 대부분의 자료들은 Nursing에 관한 것들이다.

The Dreyfus model is a fascinating explanation of how we progress through levels of expertise in a particular area. We start as novices, and as novices we need rules, guidance, rapid feedback, and safe environments. As we serve our time as a novice we’re gaining experience. Because of this, a subtle thing happens. Our brains internalize the experiences and start building conceptual frameworks. In turn, these frameworks start guiding how we do the job. This in turn flavors the experience we get, and so a cycle develops. <중략...> We process information in a qualitatively different way in the two states: novices need rules, experts need concepts and contexts. Novices need external feedback, experts generate their own.

하지만 기본적으로 어떤 개인의 능력을 Novices, Advanced Beginners, Competent, Proficient, Experts로 나눈다는 개념이 중요하리라. 한편으로 생각해보면, 드라이퍼스 모델은 어쩌면 CMMI(Capability Maturity Model® Integration)에서 말하고 있는 레벨 1부터 5와 크게 다르지 않은것 같다.

어쨌든 구글에서 Dreyfus Model이라는 키워드로 검색을 해보니, 정말 많은 자료들을 찾을 수 있었다. 그 중에서 몇가지 링크들을 다음과 같이 정리해 보았다.

Debugging: From Novice to Expert에서 드라이퍼스 모델을 이용하여 나눈 디버거(디버깅을 수행하는 사람)의 각 수준별 특징은 다음과 같다. 재미있는 것은 논문에 보면, 실험에 참여한 학생들을 이와 같은 수준으로 나눌 때, 어떤 데이터들을 참고했는지(학생들이 강의를 들으면서 남긴 로그들을 분석하였다)에 대한 내용도 함께 소개하고 있어서, 각 수준에 있는 사람들이 어떤 태도를 보이는지에 대한 연구도 가능할 듯 싶다.
